Issues and aviation safety brings aviation community to Aviation North Expo

How does the national debate in Congress on User Fees impact aviation in Alaska? Will decisions FAA is making about the NextGen air traffic control system change how we fly?  Pilots, aircraft owners, mechanics and airport operators will get the answers to these and other questions during Aviation North Expo, Oct 18-20, at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge.  Randy Kenagy, Director for Strategic Planning for AOPA in Frederick, MD will join Alaska aviation association leaders to discuss recent decisions regarding , the technology pioneered in southwest Alaska under the Capstone Program.  He will also report the latest information on the FAA funding debate.  This is just a small part of the three-day conference that will cover topics from how to stay proficient, what it takes to earn a Light Sport Pilot license, and much more.  National tech reps from all over the country will cover maintenance topics from engine metal analysis to the past, present and future of fabric coverings.

Mark Grady, with the AOPA Air Safety Foundation is returning to Alaska this year, with a new presentation on how to communicate with air traffic control. He is also giving a Flying Companion Seminar on Saturday for non-pilots to learn more about how airplanes work, and what to do in an emergency.  Bruce Williams, formerly with Microsoft, will discuss how to use the popular Microsoft Flight Simulator program as a training aid.  Seminars are also planned to discuss airport issues. Carol Ford from the California Pilots Association will share lessons learned on how to protect and promote airports. Alaska DOT will host a panel discussion on the future of airports in Alaska.

The Trade Show provides one-on-one access to a host of industry technical reps, government staff, and association leaders.  The Experimental Aircraft Association will display the wings that are being build from scratch to restore Ben Eielson’s Jenny.  On Friday night there is an Awards Banquet, where Cliff Everts and Jack McManus will receive the FAA Master Pilot Award.  Special guest John Kounis, Pilot Getaways Magazine, will regale the audience with “Places to fly in the West.”  For information, full schedules and to register, go to www.aviationnorth.org or call 877-427-5599.
