Speakers and topics for ANE 09

Aviation in Canada
Many Alaskans fly to or through Canada on their way “outside.”  To give us an insiders view of the aviation in Canada, Bram Tilroe, President of the Aviation Alberta, a seasoned general aviation pilot and retired air traffic controller will share tips and tricks on flying in Canada.  He will show features of NavCanada’s on line pilot weather briefing system, and cover some of the differences between Canadian and US procedures and practices.  In a separate presentation, Tilroe will share his experience leading air tours throughout Northern Canada and into Alaska.

Aircraft Recovery
In spite of pilot’s best efforts, occasionally we have a mishap that leaves an aircraft unairworthy, and if Murphy’s Law is in effect, the problem occurs at the maximum distance from ones home field.  To get the airplane back to a repair shop takes a special set of skills.  Joel Natwik, Tanalian Aircraft Repair of Port Alsworth, is one of the people who comes out to put your airplane back together for the ferry flight back to civilization.  All pilots should hear this presentation.

Human Factors for Mechanics
Dr. Bill Johnson is returning to ANE this year, he brings the latest in Human Factors applied to aircraft maintenance systems.  He serves as the Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor to the FAA in Washington, DC. Johnson has been a pilot and aviation maintenance technician for 40 years.  He received the FAA Administrators Award in 2006 for “Use of Plain Language” for his work on The Operator’s Manual for Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance.

AOPA Air Safety Foundation Seminars
A return visitor to Aviation North Expo in 2009, JJ Greenway will bring AOPA Air Safety Foundation’s latest seminar, What Went Wrong to Alaska.  Greenway, the Chief Flight Instructor for the Air Safety Foundation, is bringing newest of the Foundations seminars, which looks at general aviation accidents from the eyes of an investigator—working from the scene backwards to reconnect the links that comprise the accident chain.

The other seminar Greenway will present is entitled GPS from the Ground Up. This presentation integrates GPS into the entire flight regime, from flight planning and preflight, through departure, enroute and arrival phases.  It also includes real-world “gotchas” which can trick pilots who lack proper training to use these valuable tools.

New Airports Group Established in Alaska
Airports are an import element of aviation, which are often taken for granted.  To give more visibility and awareness to airports, a group of airport managers and supporters has banded together to form the Alaska Airports Association (AkAA).  Jane Dale, President of the newly established group, will host an airport managers forum with current topics that airport managers and users will discuss.
